Position Summary

The Coordinator for Retention and Diversity is responsible for developing and managing multicultural, social justice, and retention programs, initiatives, trainings, and resources for residence hall staff and the Office of Residence Life in general. The coordinator is also responsible for overseeing all aspects of the SMART Program and managing the large scale departmental diversity programs (Taste of February and Tunnel of Oppression). Additionally, the Coordinator will also serve as a student conduct officer and in the on-call rotation.

 

Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities

Retention Programs:

  • Incorporates university, divisional, and departmental annual imperatives and learning outcomes throughout respective functional area.
  • Coordinates the FSRC (Falcon Success Retention Curriculum). Coordinates the assessment of the FSRC in conjunction with the Assistant Director for Academics and Assessment.  
  • Will oversee and coordinate the implementation of the early alert follow up system for residential students.
  • Will work with various offices to identify students who are at risk of leaving the university pre-maturely. Also serves as a liaison to other offices (specifically First Year Programs) and departments on issues of Retention
  • Will research existing retention programs and national trends in housing and residence life. Will develop additional retention programs for the office.
  • Will assist in following up with students who are unpaid at the university. Will participate in university wide retention committee’s as appropriate.
  • Will attend sessions and training on retention. Will develop retention strategies for the office of residence life.
  • Will compile and monitor semester to semester and year to year residence hall retention data. Will develop training for all staff on retention methods.
  • Supervises the SMART program and staff including the graduate coordinator.
  • Develop, manage, and refine the structure of the SMART Program by conducting program evaluation and assessment.
  • Coordinate and facilitate SMART Program events and activities (academic, cultural, social, leadership programming)
  • Design, coordinate, and facilitate SMART Staff Training for Fall and Spring

Diversity Programs:

  • Coordinates and facilitates diversity programs for the Office of Residence Life.  Implements and advises the implementation of diversity programs including Taste of February and Tunnel of Oppression.
  • Provides training, guidance, strategies and resources to staff for planning and implementing Diversity Education within Residence Life.
  • Serve as a liaison to other offices (specifically Multicultural Affairs) and departments on issues of Diversity.
  • Serves as liaison with departments, including The Office of Multicultural Affairs, concerning university-wide diversity efforts.
  • Develops and conducts program evaluation for departmental diversity initiatives.
  • Implements and advises the implementation of diversity programs including Taste of February and Tunnel of Oppression.

General & Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Advises Office of Residence Life Committees.
  • Develops and manages budget for departmental diversity initiatives and for the SMART Program.
  • Serves as a team member and liaison with Assistant Directors, Coordinators, and others within Residence Life and the larger university community.
  • Participates in local, state, regional, and national conferences and other professional development opportunities.
  • Serves as a judicial hearing officer for the campus conduct process, as needed
  • Serves on Division of Student Affairs committees as appropriate.
  • Serves as a member of the "Senior Staff On-call Rotation

 

Staff Supervision & Evaluation:

  • Directly supervise one Graduate Student Coordinator for the SMART Program
  • Supervise (directly and indirectly), recruit, hire, train, and evaluate approximately 30 undergraduate SMART Program staff members
  • Provides feedback and evaluative comments to the hall directors regarding expectations for academic programs and assessment initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills or Abilities

  • Knowledge of college student development, multicultural, and social justice theories and trends.
  • Knowledge of academic, leadership, and diversity issues and programming.
  • Knowledge of retention issues and trends.
  • Knowledge of college student development theory.
  • Experience in developing and facilitating workshops, and in retention and diversity.
  • Knowledge of residence hall operations
  • Experience with undergraduate, graduate, and or professional staff supervision.
  • Experience planning, developing, managing and reconciling budgets.
  • Prior work with crisis management, university crisis teams, and student conduct
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication and administrative skills and a demonstrated desire to work with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Experience with recruitment, training, and selection of staff.
  • Experience with student organization advising.
  • Knowledge of academic, leadership, or diversity programming, theory, and trends. Ability to work on several projects concurrently. Create problem solving skills.
  • Basic computer skills, budget management skills, and creative problem solving.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications

Master's Degree required in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling or Related Field.  Successful candidate must have Master’s degree conferred at the time of application. 



The following experience is required:

  • 2  years of graduate or professional level supervision
  • 1-2 years working with retention initiatives
  • 1-2 years working with diversity programming

 

Preferred Experience

  • 1-2 years of experience working in a housing or residence life operation
  • 1-2 years of crisis management and or experience as part of an on call duty rotation


Salary

Full-time, Administrative staff position available. Administrative Grade Level 354. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Full benefit package available.
