Position Summary

In addition to advising students, the Director of Advising has oversight responsibility for the advising program, retention initiatives, and student services provided by the Undergraduate Student Services office in the College. The Director develops goals and supports the achievement of goals to strengthen and ensure an innovative high-quality advising program. The program includes providing support for students to help facilitate students plans toward graduation and career goals, retention and persistence efforts, and interactions with external groups that support students across campus such as career services, disability, services, registration and records, etc.) The Director is a member of the University wide advising leadership team, the Senior Advising Council. The Director is expected to proactively remain up to date on best practices and research in undergraduate services, retention, and persistence. The successful candidate would possess leadership characteristics of flexibility, integrity, creativity, problem solving, and patience.

 

Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities

Administration and Leadership for Advising Unit

  • Supports the development of the College strategic plan as related to student advising and student success.   
  • Plans, directs, supervises and evaluates the work of academic advisors, USS graduate assistants and support staff.
  • Works with faculty advisors/mentors to support their advising and mentoring of students.
  • Understands and supports others in the use of advising software systems such as CSS/MyBGSU, SSC [Navigate], successNET/early alert, DARS, Schedule Planner, Canvas, Query, Data Warehouse/STARS, FalconINFO, Public Tableau, etc.)
  • Contributes to the College and advising unit’s student success, retention, and persistence goals by utilizing best-practices and current research related to student success.
  •  Manage the coordination of and day-to-day operation of advising.
  • Coordinates Student Orientation Advising and Registration [SOAR] activities for new students and serves on University Orientation Advisory Committee.
  • Coordinates CTAAE participation in Transfer Tuesdays to support students transferring from community colleges.
  • Coordinates Linked Courses with departmental secretaries, chairs, and director.
  • Coordinates Opening Weekend: Get With the Program and First Class.
  • Responsible for ensuring the consistent production, collection and reporting of data related to the assessment of advising practices, student office traffic, student performance, advisor performance, and supports the development of new metrics of performance.
  • Serves as a point of contact for students with academic issues and complaints.
  • Communicates and interacts with the College Dean, Associate Dean, and/or Assistant Vice Provost as needed.
  • Assists in the creation, production and maintenance of print and electronic marketing materials for the advising unit, including the website.

College Specific Responsibilities and Duties

  • Supervise maintenance of advising files and accurate enrollment records
  • Provide direct advising of students in one or more of the College’s degree programs. 
  • Provide advising training for faculty mentors.
  • Provide supervision and strategic planning for recruitment and retention.
  • Responsible for announcements to undergraduate students, and other important announcements via email, call center, social media, text messaging, etc.

University Wide Leadership Related to Advising and Student Success

  • Represents the College on various university and college committees and work-groups including the University Orientation Advisory Committee, Senior Advising Council, Advising Commissions, curriculum committees, etc.
  • Serve as primary point of contact between the Assistant Vice Provost and College faculty and advisors related to Education Advisory Board/Student Success Collaborative initiative.
  • As a member of the Senior Advising Council, leads short-term teams to review policy, assists in coordinating the development and implementation of advising best-practices, assists in the development and delivery of various university-wide advisor training and professional development efforts.  
  • Additional duties as assigned.

  • Commitment to diversity and ability to work with individuals or groups with diverse backgrounds

 

 

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, Guidance and Counseling or other field related to the College specialty such as Engineering or Technology.  Successful candidate must have Master’s degree conferred at the time of application. 



Also the following experience is required:

  • 3 years of academic advising in higher education
  • 1 year of supervisory experience.


Salary

Full-time, Administrative staff position available. Administrative Grade Level 359. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Full benefit package available.
