Manuscripts Archivist
Position Summary
The Manuscripts Archivist in consultation with the Head Librarian, initiates and coordinates archival processing and description of manuscript collections in the Browne Popular Culture Library (BPCL). In conjunction with other University Libraries (UL) entities, serves as curator for outward facing exhibits, organizes public outreach activities, and develops partnerships with related organizations and collections to promote the BPCL collections. Assists in the training and functional supervision of student employees, graduate assistants as assigned. Provides reference services for students, faculty and off-campus researchers utilizing primary and secondary research materials. Participates in tours, presentations and library instruction activities for BGSU classes and off-campus groups. Supports BGSU diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives related to the UL, BPCL and the UL Special Collections Department.
Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities
- In consultation with the Head Librarian, coordinates and assists in the processing of manuscript collections; develops policies, procedures and guidelines for the accessioning, description, loan, handling and care of manuscript collections. Provides acquisition and deaccessioning recommendations and participates in consultation activities for the conservation and preservation of manuscripts. Writes new and updates existing finding aids and LibGuides. Collaborates with other Special Collections units to participate in cross-unit manuscript processing and project coordination initiatives. Serves as a subject expert for the BPCL manuscript collection and participates in the promotion of the BPCL collection.
- Participates and provides support for the development of collaborative partnerships with key stakeholders on and off campus for projects that promote, enhance and preserve the BPCL’s collections and services. Assists in developing and implementing educational tours, programs, and activities including exhibition receptions and openings. Participates in public outreach activities for the BPCL, including, providing tours and instructional presentations on BPCL holdings and their research value to BGSU classes and off-campus groups
- Researches, proposes, and develops digital and physical exhibits designed for internal and external audiences. Selects content for exhibits and consults with colleagues on the display of BPCL materials. Promotes BPCL digital collections to BGSU faculty, students and the greater scholarly community.

Knowledge, Skills or Abilities
- Strong technology skills and archival processing skills and working knowledge of digitization practices and Encoded Archival Description (EAD).\
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience processing manuscript collections
- Professional or academic experience in one of the following areas comics, graphic novels, fiction or fan studies, television and film. (preferred)
- Knowledge of archival management issues and trends including applications for organizing and managing archival research data.
- Knowledge and experience with standard archival tools (i.e. Preservica, Archive Space) or a similar industry product.

Minimum Qualifications
Master of Library Science (MLS) from an ALA-accredited program required, bachelor’s degree in Cultural Studies or related field preferred. Degree must be conferred at the time of application.
The following experience is required:
- 1 year archival or special collections experience
- 1 year of experience with digital archives
Salary
Full-time, Administrative staff position available. Administrative Pay Grade 354. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Full benefit package available.
