Research Technician - Freshwater
Position Summary
The Technician supervises Lake Erie field operations, sampling sites in the lake and regional reservoirs and overseeing the processing and storage of samples for biological and chemical analysis. The Technician will also be running bioassay experiments testing the environmental conditions that favor the formation of harmful algal blooms in freshwater lakes.
Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities
- Supervises undergraduate student research assistants in the field and the lab
- Processes water samples for biological and chemical analyses
- Assists in the deployment of sensors and data buoys in Lake Erie
- Conducts experiments testing nutrient and temperature effects on algal bloom formation in lakes
- Compiles and analyzing environmental data from experiments, data buoys and research trips
- Coordinates meetings with collaborators from participating labs (Wisconsin and Minnesota) and shipping samples to those labs.
Knowledge, Skills or Abilities
The position requires skills in data management using common tools (Excel), as well as proficiency in statistical programming in R. Experience working in multivariate statistics is preferred.
Minimum Qualifications:
A Master's degree in an area of environmental science or a degree in biology, chemistry or a related field. Degree must be conferred at the time of application.
The following experience is required:
- 2 years of water quality research experience. (Graduate assistantship time will be considered. Two years of graduate work will be accepted as one year of professional work)
Salary
Full-time, Administrative staff position available. Administrative Grade Level 352. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Full benefit package available.
