Summary
This position provides technical support, engineering, and design for an extensive array of electronic equipment and instrumentation employed in the research labs of faculty in the Department of Chemistry, the Center for Photochemical Sciences, the Department of Physics & Astronomy, and the School of Earth, Environment & Society (SEES). This position also provides similar support to the electronic equipment and instrumentation used in those units' instructional laboratories. The position also assists research and instructional labs with upkeep and troubleshooting for computers that require custom configurations to interface to the instruments they control and therefore are not supported by ITS. For ITS supported computer systems, the position provides decentralized IT services, primarily centered around hardware support and troubleshooting. The position additionally oversees the operation of and performs required maintenance on large format poster printers within the collaborating units.
Essential Functions
• Troubleshoot and repair electronic equipment, circuitry, and data collection interfaces associated with research laboratories in Chemistry, Photochemical Sciences, Physics & Astronomy, and SEES. In some cases, this is custom in-house designed equipment and in other cases commercial. For commercial systems, the incumbent often works with the manufacturer's service desk, remotely, so that repairs can be done without requiring an expensive service call.
• Provide service for specialized, non-ITS supported, instrument connected computers. Often this is hardware related requiring power supply or disk drive replacement. Troubleshooting of custom interface and controller boards is also common. Reinstallation, and when possible, operating system upgrades, is often required following a hardware failure.
• Provide “decentralized” troubleshooting and service for ITS supported computers. In most cases these would be “gently used” ITS systems deployed into research labs for data management and distribution, data analysis, and laboratory recordkeeping. Most often these are hardware issues that can be rectified locally.
• Design and fabricate electrical/mechanical interfaces and/or equipment. For some of the unique research projects undertaken, there is no commercial source for a required electronic interface or controller. One such example is described more fully in the following section.
• Repair electrical equipment from instructional labs. The three units served by this position have an extensive collection of electrical equipment and instrumentation (balances, heater/stirrers, melting point instruments) that function non-stop under harsh conditions. Non-catastrophic failures are often repairable with minor maintenance or low-cost replacement parts.
• Operate and maintain large format printers (poster printers). Both the Chemistry department and SEES operate large format printers which are used extensively by students who attend scientific meeting to present their results. These require specialized inks and papers and much more maintenance than ITS laser printers.
• Manage department and school asset inventories via our customized, web-based identification system. Provide annual updates, as required by the Controller's office, on the current state of these items.
• Troubleshoot and repair equipment associated with the planetarium projection system and the Observatory telescope system.
• Other duties as assigned

The following Degree is required:
• Bachelor's Degree. Degree must be conferred at time of application
The following Experience is required:
• 3 years troubleshooting and maintaining electronic equipment and computer hardware and software.
