QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  1. Minimum of Master’s Degree in program related field.  South Dakota Administrative Certificate required.
  2. Appropriate teaching experience.  Leadership experience is preferred.
  3. Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational and time management skills.  Technologically proficient in word processing, spreadsheets, data entry, email, and web-based applications. Ability to work with frequent interruptions and keep information confidential. Adhere to district’s policies and procedures.

Superintendent

 

RECEIVES GUIANCE FROM: 

Superintendent, Building Administrators, and Business Manager

 

WORKS WITH:

Administrative staff, certified and classified staff, parents, and outside agencies.

 

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

To provide leadership in development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of Special Services Programs, including special education, gifted, English learners, Title programs, and 504 for the entire Brookings School District.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Up and down motion in the office; bending; stretching; and lifting up to 20 pounds.  Mobility in and around office/school area.  Constant hand-eye and mind-eye coordination. Frequent walking, keyboarding, speaking, writing, bending, carrying, pushing, pulling, sitting, reaching, stooping, and turning. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Supervise Special Services Programs, including special education, gifted, English learners, Title programs, and 504 according to local, state, and federal guidelines.

 

  1. Monitor procedures for referral, evaluation, placement and development of individualized education plans.

 

  1. Communicate with parents during the referral, evaluation and placement process as needed.

 

  1. Provide leadership in the development, implementation and maintenance of effective programs for students with special services.

 

  1. Attend district and out-of-district meetings as the administrator and ensure that each individualized education plan is implemented, monitored and up-dated annually as needed.

 

  1. Meet with special services staff on a regular basis to disseminate information, discuss in-service topics and resolve current challenges.

 

  1. Assist with and communication with the building principal hiring and evaluating of special education staff, English learners, Title and gifted program staff.

 

  1. Coordinate with the superintendent and building principals in solving challenges pertaining to special education programs and/or to students.

 

  1. Process and maintain appropriate reports for the Office of Special Education; keeping abreast of federal and state laws pending legislation to ensure compliance with rules and regulations.

 

  1. Plan, coordinate, and conduct annual child find screenings.

 

  1. Coordinate schedules of support staff, such as, school psychologist, occupational therapist, physical therapist and hearing and vision consultants.

 

  1. Provide information to the school board and district patrons through presentations, articles, and brochures.

 

  1. Assist the Director of Transportation in special transportation for students.

 

  1. In collaboration with the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, determine what materials need to be purchased to support determined curriculum for special services children.

 

  1. Assist with and coordinate development of the consolidated application.

 

  1. Assist with and coordinate the Language Services Plan.

 

  1. Requisition materials within a manageable budget.

 

  1. Assist with the development and preparation of the department budget and fulfill requirements for funding with the Department of Education.

 

  1. Arrange for staff development and training for special services staff members.

 

  1. Strive to help promote safety, health, and comfort of all students within the school district.

 

  1. Promote a positive image of the Brookings School District.

 

  1. Perform other duties as assigned by the superintendent.
