Discovery Attorney
Purpose of Position:
Under the direction of Education Minnesota’s General Counsel, the Discovery Attorney will work with Legal Department staff to complete document review and other discovery activities. This position is hourly and will last approximately four weeks, with opportunities to continue or return for additional assignments on an as-needed basis for up to six months.
Major Functions and Responsibilities:
- With minimal supervision, review documents for relevance to discovery requests and identify any documents that may be protected by attorney-client, work product, or other privileges.
- Work with Legal Department staff to develop efficient document review and electronic storage procedures.
- Respond to staff questions relating to discovery requests.
- Accurately record time spent and work performed.
- Other job-related duties of a like or similar nature as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Strong understanding of the state and federal rules of civil procedure and evidence.
- Understanding and compliance with the rules of professional responsibility for attorneys.
- Basic computer skills including word processing.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups of people.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to perform and work well under deadlines/pressures.
- Ability to organize, prioritize and manage multiple projects in a timely fashion.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate degree
- Admitted to practice in Minnesota state court.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Admitted to practice in Minnesota federal district court.
- Experience in labor relations.
- Experience in completing document review as part of federal or state litigation.
Additional Comments:
This is a full-time temporary position, lasting approximately four (4) weeks, but may continue at reduced hours for up to six (6) months.
Physical Demands:
Work is in a general office environment. Employee is required to: Continuously sit, talk and hear; frequently stand, walk and repetitively use hands dexterously (use fingers to handle, feel), reach with hands and arms, bend and physically lift and carry up to 25 pounds; occasionally lift up to 50 pounds and infrequently travel by various conveyances (e.g., air, rail, auto).
