Candidates must be legal residents of Albany, Columbia, Rensselaer, Saratoga or Washington County. Preference for appointment may be given to successful candidates who have been legal residents of Rensselaer County.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Associate’s Degree from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college in manufacturing or mechanical engineering or technology or closely related field and two years of full-time paid field experience in the manufacturing environment OR Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college in manufacturing or mechanical engineering or technology or closely related field.
Please Note: The successful candidate must take and pass the Civil Service exam for Laboratory Technician when offered, and be reachable on the Civil Service list to qualify for permanent appointment.
DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES: The Laboratory Technician performs work under the direction of professional staff members with latitude allowed for the exercise of independent judgement in carrying out the details of the assignment in accordance with definitely defined procedures. Supervision is exercised over other manufacturing labs, assistants and or work-study students assigned to the advanced manufacturing laboratories. The Laboratory Technician reports to the director, department chair or program director and performs the following duties:
• Assists in the supervision of laboratory assistants and work-study students in the Advanced Manufacturing Technology labs, including metrology, additive, industrial maintenance, and CAD/CAM labs.
• Orientates new employees and work-study students concerning policies, regulations and job duties.
• Maintains schedules of laboratory assistants and or work-study students.
• Organizes storage areas, maintains the cleanliness and safety of storage areas and laboratories.
• Assigns work to appropriate laboratory assistants and work-study students, informs faculty members of any problems with execution of work orders and make appropriate recommendations.
• Prepares yearly supply orders for materials requested by faculty and staff, prepares for and executes bidding procedures when appropriate.
• Maintains a running inventory on items in stockrooms or laboratories, prepares purchase requisitions.
• Unpacks and inventories deliveries to insure completeness.
• Rotates perishable items, maintaining quality control.
• Will monitor working department budget, keeping management abreast of balances.
• Sets up and checks operation of all laboratory equipment.
• Performs preventive maintenance and repairs for AMT equipment and instruments where feasible. Helps develop preventative maintenance procedures and arranges for equipment repair by outside vendors when needed.
• Monitors the disposal of waste materials, insures conformity to environmental standards.
• Serves as AMT Lab point of contact as needed for department suppliers, vendors, OEM representatives and HVCC departments such as Physical Plant.
• Sets up and operates manual and CNC metalworking machine tools, assisting faculty and students as needed.
• Programs CNC machine tools using G & M code programming, assistant faculty and staff as needed.
Hourly Rate: $22.0630
