Experienced Estate Planning Attorney

We are seeking an experienced attorney for our Private Client Services practice in our Seattle office. Attorneys who are part of our Private Client Services Team counsel clients on the full range of estate and gift planning, estate administration, family business governance and transition planning, family office services and dispute resolution matters. The team has extensive experience working with high net worth individuals and multi-generational families, including founders, owners and leaders of businesses and charitable organizations of all sizes.
Job Responsibilities:
- Strategically advising clients about their estate planning and drafting wills, trusts and related estate planning documents, including durable powers of attorney and health care directives; prenuptial, cohabitation and property status agreements; partnership, LLC and buy-sell agreements; and succession and family-transition planning to protect family- and closely-held businesses
- Communicating with clients and family members regarding the management and operation of family and closely-held businesses
- Providing sophisticated tax planning to minimize state and federal estate, gift and other transfer taxes, as well as preparing federal and state estate and gift tax returns
- Advising clients regarding charitable planning, including charitable trusts, donor advised funds, supporting organizations, private foundations and tax-exempt organizations
- Business planning, including business succession planning, transition of business ownership and representation of the business in tax-related matters
- Advising families and fiduciaries in the settlement of estates and the ongoing administration of lifetime and testamentary trusts
- Assisting with probate and transfer of estate assets, including managing estates with complex assets, business succession and multi-generational planning needs; addressing foreign inheritance, tax and other cross-border issues; navigating transfer tax audits that arise out of estate settlements and postmortem tax planning
- Counseling trustees about their duties related to the administration of trusts
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will have at least four years of experience in all aspects of estate and trust planning, including estate and gift taxation, estate and trust administration, business succession, income tax planning for closely-held businesses, and charitable giving. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and an unswerving client service ethic are a must for this position.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience working with high net worth individuals and families, including diverse clients with wide-ranging service needs, working knowledge and experience with community property regimes, an LLM in taxation, non-profit experience, advising tax-exempt organizations on governance and tax-related issues, and admission to the Washington, Oregon and/or California bar.
