Minimum requirements: Certification as Corrections Officer by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission. Other qualifications as determined by the Sheriff. Pay scale [applies to classified positions only]: Beginning: Corrections Officer/Deputy Sheriff pay level, appropriate to seniority. Ending: Corrections Officer/Deputy Sheriff pay level, appropriate to seniority Identification Information The Corrections Officer/Jail Deputy Sheriff is that person who, under the general supervision of the floor supervisor detention function provides day-to-day control and care of inmates housed in the Lucas County Correction Center or otherwise in the custody of the Sheriff; and who maintains the safety and security of the physical plant of the Lucas County Correction Center and the Sheriff. To perform the following general security duties: To supervise the activities of inmates, ensuring that they are kept in secure custody. To make regular inmate and security checks. To supervise inmates and visitors during scheduled visitation. To transport inmates within the physical plant of the Lucas County Correction Center, as required. To conduct inmate body and facility searches as required. To respond appropriately to emergency or unusual situations. To maintain accurate, complete, and timely records of inmate activities and of other occurrences, as appropriate and required; and to use the appropriate reporting form [logs, Critical Incident Reports, C/O Report, etc.]. To assist as required with distribution/retrieval of Commissary orders and deliveries. To operate appropriate the electronic locking system and other security devices. To monitor visitor [attorney, clergy, and the like] activity on the floor, ensuring that security-restricted areas are not compromised, and that Lucas County Sheriff's Office policy and procedures are complied with. To escort, as required, visitors, contract personnel, and vendors to and from the Security Area of the Lucas County Correction Center; and to ensure that the visitors, contract personnel, and vendors are accompanied throughout the conduct of their business on the floor. Job Summary Job Responsibilities & Duties/Tasks To perform the following general emergency duties: To work proactively to prevent inmate escape and escape attempts, through performing regular window and security checks and otherwise. To report immediately through the chain of command any unusual or emergency situations or incidents. To act as directed by command personnel to respond to emergency or unusual situations as back-up or otherwise in any area of the physical plant of the Lucas County Correction Center.
To perform the following general inmate control duties: To assist as required in the evacuation of inmates, visitors, and staff. To apply as appropriate and as directed by supervisor[s] restraint devices to inmates, ensuring that the devices are applied securely but humanely. To act timely and appropriately, or to assist as required, to subdue inmates who present an immediate danger to themselves or to others, using appropriate force commensurate with Lucas County Sheriff's Office policy, and acting only at he direction of supervisor[s] or others in the upward chain of command.
To perform the following general search duties: To search thoroughly and as appropriate areas of the physical plant of the Lucas County Correction Center, including inmate living areas, visiting areas, recreation areas, and the like. To conduct appropriate [commensurate with Lucas County Sheriff's Office policy] and thorough but humane inmate body searches, including clothed patdown [frisk] searches and strip searches, but excluding body cavity searches. To conduct appropriate [commensurate with Lucas County Sheriff's Office policy] and thorough searches of inmate property, as required.
To perform the following inmate housing management duties: To compile timely and thorough wing logs, reports, and the like; and to verify their accuracy. To supervise inmates, as required, during medical assessment and/or treatment provided within the physical plant of the Lucas County Correction Center. To resolve inmate disputes informally; and to report any disputes that cannot be so resolved. To supervise trusty activity during meal service and implement retrieval, when trustees are assigned to such duty. To move inmates, as required, in and out of living areas. To transport inmates to destinations away form the physical plant of the Lucas County Correction Center, as required and appropriate.
To perform the following general operating duties: To report timely along the chain of command security and/or maintenance deficiencies or violations. To respond timely and appropriately to inmate questions and concerns. To prepare as required appropriate inmate disciplinary reports. To process appropriately and to report accurately the finding of contraband.
To perform the following general visitation duties: To conduct clothed body searches [patdowns/frisks] of incoming visitors, conducting them commensurate with Lucas County Sheriff's Office policy. To compile visitors lists with inmates, and to process, together with the Visitation counselor, visitors when they arrive at the Lucas County Correction Center. To monitor contact and non-contact visits with inmates, ensuring that security is not breached; and to react appropriately if security or other violations occur. To perform any and all other lawful tasks as assigned by supervisor, persons in chain of command, or Sheriff [see below].
