McClatchy is seeking an experienced data visualization developer to join its News Experiences team. The data visualization developer on the NewsX team serves McClatchy’s 30 markets by helping newsrooms conceive, organize and visualize their data stories in creative and provocative ways. We’re looking for someone who can build compelling data experiences that enhance McClatchy’s mission of delivering high quality, local journalism.

The ideal candidate will work as part of a fast-moving team that partners directly with newsrooms on major enterprise work. Those efforts will include enhancing the presentation of the content along with visualization elements. The data visualization developer will also seek to create enterprise-wide solutions for data visualization, including tools for smaller markets that take advantage of automation. We’re looking for initiative, too, to tell unique stories with data that can be used throughout the company’s websites.

A motivated, collegial work style is a must, as is the desire to learn continuously. A strong track record working with data visualization of news content is preferred but not required.

Job Requirements

  • Adept understanding of modern web development using HTML/CSS and Javascript 
  • Experience working with UI frameworks (React, Svelte, etc.) and visualization libraries like D3.js.
  • Understanding of responsive design / interaction design and user interfaces
  • Familiarity working with APIs and web scraping
  • Ability to conceptualize data visualizations and creative storytelling working with newsrooms
  • Ability to make deadlines and work on deadline and adapt to new priorities
  • Collaboration / Initiative
  • Visual communication skills to convey complex ideas to stakeholders
  • Clean, concise, readable code; Good annotation and documentation skills

Preferred

  • Experience working with cloud computing and functions (AWS, Google Cloud Platform)
  • R / Python

Qualifications

  • BA, BS, or BFA in computer science, design, statistics, journalism or a related field
  • 3+ years of professional experience
  • Portfolio demonstrating strength in data visualization and implementation
