Assistant Controller
The Blade, the Pulitzer-prize winning newspaper and Toledo's #1 source for news, information and advertising, is looking for an Assistant Controller to join our Finance Department. The Blade is not only the largest newspaper in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan, but along with toledoblade. com, Blade NewsSlide, and eBlade we reach more than 300,000 people weekly.
The Assistant Controller reports directly to the Director of Finance and I.T. and is responsible for the following functions at The Blade: Ensure accurate and timely monthly and year end close processes and financial reporting. Assist with preparation of the annual budget. Develop and implement business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls. Collaborate with other Company managers to support overall Company goals and objectives. Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual financial audit. Proactively identify opportunities for improvement of financial performance. Supervise the accounting staff and manage the team's work flow to ensure work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner. Identify efficiency and automation opportunities within existing work flows or business processes. Follow and enforce the Company's policies and procedures at all times. Additional responsibilities and projects as assigned in support of business objectives.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting - required
- 3-5 years of progressive and responsible accounting experience - required
- CPA - preferred
- 1-2 years of managerial/supervisory experience - preferred
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word - required
In depth understanding of GAAP and Internal Controls; Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills, able to articulate with tact and diplomacy; Strong analytical skills and attention to detail; Extreme sense of responsibility and confidentiality; Ability to effectively manage and mentor staff; Display exceptional work ethic, time management, and organization skills.
