FLEET MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR
SUMMARY:
This is a working supervisor position under general direction of the Road & Service Superintendent. This position is responsible for maintaining a Township fleet of fire apparatus, EMS and police vehicles, heavy and medium duty trucks, heavy equipment, pumps, mowers, tractors, static generator sets and other equipment. The position is non-unionized and serves at the pleasure of the Board of Trustees.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assigns and documents maintenance operations, diagnoses and performs repairs
- Directs a staff of skilled ASE and EVT certified technicians’
- Interprets and enforces the Collective Bargaining Agreement and Township Policies
- Provides technical assistance to Road Superintendent and other department heads
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- Establish schedules and methods for providing services; identify resource needs; review needs with appropriate management staff
- Allocate applicable resources accordingly
- Maintain service area and equipment
- Prepare and submit reports as requested
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Road & Service Superintendent
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
MINIMUM:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- 5 years’ experience as Medium/Heavy truck mechanic
- 2 years in a supervisory position in fleet maintenance operations.
- Current ASE certification in T2, T4-T8, A1, and A4-A8
- Valid Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement (ability to obtain endorsement w/in 6 months of hire)
- Ability to obtain Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) F-1 within 12 months.
DESIRED
- 7 years’ experience in mechanical service work
- Valid Class A CDL w/tanker endorsement
- Current ASE Master Certifications in T-Series, and A-Series
- Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Manager level 1 and Level II in F series
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Possess good oral and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively with other departments and outside business
- Diagnose and repair systems to include but not limited to ABS, steering suspension, electrical, cooling, lubrication, air conditioning, diesel and hydraulics, and fuel on various equipment.
- Possess basic welding skills
- Maintain ASE Certifications
- Maintain class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement
- Define problems and draw valid conclusions.
- Oral and written communication
- Tact and courtesy when interacting with the public, vendors, suppliers, and staff.
- Operate all software programs necessary to meet the needs of Sylvania Township and the Road & Service department
- Ability to work overtime or on-call as needed with prompt and regular attendance
SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Road & Service Superintendent. Must be a self-starter and work independently with little direct supervision. This position includes direct supervision of the mechanics in the Road & Service department.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Moving and lifting of objects up to 50 pounds
- Full-Service Shop with exposure to fumes, dust, moderate noise, natural allergens, and petroleum-based products
- Occasional inclement weather work such as: cold, heat, rain, wind, snow, and humidity
- Standing for long periods of time
- Grasp, reach with hands, arms, bending reaching, stooping.
- Push, pull, twist, kneel, squat and work in and under heavy equipment
TOOLS & EQUPMENT USED:
Basic and advanced mechanic hand tools, power tools, portable lifting devices, overhead cranes, plasma cutter, welders, torches, generators, compressors, pumps, and computer software diagnostics.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Own and maintain personal tools to perform essential job functions. Specialty tools and diagnostic tools are supplied. ANSI certified protective toe boot (allowance provided), and tool reimbursement for broken or damaged tools. Nicotine and drug free work environment and subject to random testing.
