University Communications and Public Affairs (UCPA) is an award-winning, full-service division dedicated to increasing awareness and spreading the word about UC San Diego’s impact and mission. Department staff work with campus departments to convey the amazing things UC San Diego students, faculty, staff and alumni are doing and help campus departments implement strategies to reach their audience through events, media relations, printed materials, websites and numerous other avenues. Division reports to the Assistant Chancellor / Chief of Staff within the Chancellor's Office VC Area.
DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Executive Director of University Communications, the Senior Social Media Strategist will be responsible for planning, overseeing and reporting on programs that support the goals and objectives of the UC San Diego communications strategy. Advances UC San Diego’s visibility and creates an integrated and effective social media program using a broad spectrum of tools and technologies.
Develops and maintains a comprehensive social media strategy that defines how social media marketing techniques apply to increase visibility and traffic across UC San Diego channels. Leads highly complex organization-wide communications programs. Works with various UC San Diego units to explore and identify ways to integrate social media into communications strategies and marketing campaigns. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Makes decisions about content strategy, choosing different outlets and making recommendations to senior leaders on where to communicate with various audiences and how to approach them within that medium. Manages the central UC San Diego social media channels, which function as the “official” UC San Diego accounts and currently include Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and YouTube.
Ensures UC San Diego is engaged in emerging interactive media trends and has an active array of communications focused on specific target audiences. Manages online reputation by monitoring social media for emerging areas of criticism or concern for the university. Leads the strategy and management of all central UC San Diego social media channels during crisis situations. Leads the development of organization-wide social media management standards, policies and rules of engagement for social media. Mentors and provides training to communication and management professionals. Defines key performance indicators and implement enterprise-level measurement, analytics, and reporting methods to gauge success.
Serves as a member of the Editorial Board for This Week @ UC San Diego, the campus’s weekly digital newsmagazine.
QUALIFICATIONS
• 7-10 years of experience leading digital marketing strategies and content development, including social media strategy, execution, and analytics.
• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
• Advanced knowledge and experience with all aspects of social media communications including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications to create, develop, and implement long and short-term strategic communication plans.
• Advanced knowledge of and skill to understand, strategize, execute, and analyze current and emerging social media channels including but not limited to: Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and YouTube.
• Experience in monitoring social media channels during crises and general understanding of crisis management of social media.
• Advanced interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen and skill in trouble-shooting and applying proactive and positive solutions. Experience using interpersonal, communication and public relations skills to develop and maintain strong working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, and to effectively communicate complex and technical theory and information in an understandable manner through various channels to diverse audiences.
• Experience creating and identifying quality social media content related to a variety of topics, preferably including academic and research topics.
• Advanced project management skills to complete projects within budget and time constraints. Experience meeting tight deadlines and balancing multiple projects and priorities simultaneously, with minimal supervision, and coordinating the work of contributors with attention to detail, while completing projects with excellence.
• Advanced skill to monitor and assess processes or services and make necessary improvements.
• Writing, editing and proofreading skills, including proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence construction and formatting styles to clearly and effectively communicate ideas and information across a variety of digital and social media platforms.
• Experience utilizing ethical search engine optimization (SEO) techniques to increase visibility and traffic.
• Advanced knowledge and understanding of digital communication media, including content management systems and / or relevant web applications used for web site production, and organization-specific computer application programs.
• Experience applying judgement and discretion when working with highly sensitive and confidential information.
• Experience working collaboratively and productively with diverse groups of individuals at all levels within a complex organization, often with wide differences of opinion.
