Mechanical / Electrical Engineering Assistant
The National Advanced Driving Simulator (NADS) seeks a qualified individual to perform and coordinate activities associated with the miniSim Driving Simulator Program. The NADS is a self‐sustained transportation safety research center at the University of Iowa. Funded by government and industry, NADS utilizes its suite of world‐class driving simulators and instrumented on‐road vehicles to conduct research studies for the private and public sectors.
The miniSim simulation systems we design and build are used for research and development at over 55 locations in the US, Canada, and overseas. The successful applicant will be part of a team including software, hardware, IT, and mechanical engineers. This position provides experience in the design-build‐deliver‐support process.
Part‐time (20‐40 hrs/wk) hourly position starting immediately, flexible schedule, however work hours must overlap with the typical 9am – 5pm work day. Actual hours will be dependent on project workload. Occasional nights and weekends possible depending on project schedules.
Typical duties include design, selecting parts and components, creation of engineering part drawings, assembly, maintaining bills of material and assembly documentation, and setup/tear down of simulators. Will assist in providing technical support for customers using our simulators. Some travel may be required. Other duties as assigned.
Technical or Engineering education (Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, etc.) Willingness to learn and a positive attitude is very important. Must have experience with CAD tools and drafting and design methods. Must have strong aptitude for hands‐on engineering and assembly and selection of parts/components. Attention to detail and willingness to learn workmanship skills and perform quality work is important. Ability to lift 50 lbs. Occasional greasy/dirty work.
