The mission of the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity (OMAD) is to create pathways for diverse populations to access postsecondary opportunities, nurture and support their academic success, and cultivate a campus climate that enriches the educational experience for all. Within OMAD is the College Access unit that implements programs focused on expanding access for under-served communities by partnering with K-12 school districts, two-year colleges and community coalitions.
The Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity Multicultural Outreach & Recruitment team has an outstanding opportunity for a Counseling Services Coordinator.
The Counseling Services Coordinator will participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of multicultural outreach programs designed to increase the number of transfer applicants and enrolled transfer students from diverse backgrounds to the University of Washington.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Identify, communicate with and advise students who plan to transfer from community colleges and other universities to attend the UW. Communicate consistently and effectively with transfer applicants and their families in person, by phone, email, text messaging, printed media, and via social media regarding the multiplicity of factors involved in the comprehensive review process of admission. Advise students on selecting and completing challenging courses that meet academic and admission standards. Advise career and transfer guidance counselors on the admissions process.
• Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of multicultural outreach programs designed to increase the number of students from diverse backgrounds who apply and enroll at the UW.
• Establish regular office hours at community colleges within specific geographic areas. Offer counseling in college planning, preparation and assistance in areas of admission, completion of admission and financial aid forms, scholarship applications, housing, first year programs, etc.
• Conduct parent/student/community workshops at colleges and other venues regarding the UW holistic admission process, UW academics, student experiences and opportunities.
• Assist in the coordination of outreach/pipeline activities; working with community colleges, community agencies, church groups, local television and radio stations as well as distributing social media and print materials. Attend educationally related local community events on behalf of UW.
• Lead for TheDream.US scholarship - identifying prospective applicants who could qualify for the scholarship, assist applicants in filling out the scholarship, and coordinating communication regards applicants to TheDream.US organization.
• Development of productivity and status reports.
• Support freshmen recruitment as needed.
• Other duties as assigned including participating on committees for other student based organizations both on and off campus.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor's Degree in Education, Social, or Human Services
• At least two years admissions counseling and/or outreach experience, or equivalent.
• Strong public speaking skills and the ability to present the University in a positive way to diverse populations.
• A highly motivated self-starter with an ability to set and meet goals, to make decisions independently, and to multi-task and prioritize in fast-paced environments
• Demonstrated lead experience with project management, especially involving university teams and/or committee convening roles.
• Fearless communicator with demonstrated in-person, social media, and written experience.
• Team player who can play both a leading and a supporting role.
• Experience working with first generation and racial/ethnically diverse populations as well as an understanding of their cultural differences and their effect on college planning.
• Must be able to effectively communicate across various demographics beyond and within the UW campus.
• Experience with undergraduate admissions.
• Must be comfortable with technology and have basic familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets and database software tools.
• Must be able to demonstrate ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team.
• Strong quantitative data manipulation skills such as advanced Excel spreadsheet capability.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE
• Experience in both freshman and transfer admissions recruitment, experience with outreach in Washington's Community and Technical College system and an understanding of the distinctive qualities of the UW.
• Experience as a transfer applicant with knowledge of transferring from a community college to a university.
