UW Facilities manages the University’s buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. The Asset Management group includes Capital & Space Management, Real Estate, Sustainability and other teams responsible for planning and workload management. The Operations group includes Project Delivery, Maintenance & Construction, Campus Utilities & Operations, Building Services, Transportation Services and Safety. Supporting these groups, as well as the separate Emergency Management team, are the Business Intelligence & Information Technology group and the Finance & Administration group.
Asset Management has an outstanding opportunity for a Facilities Architect.
Under the general supervision and guidance from the Engineering Manager, this position provides technical architectural experience during the programming, planning, design, construction, commissioning, turnover, operations and maintenance of UW facilities and infrastructure. UW’s Seattle main campus comprises over 300 buildings and 15 million gross square feet, including a major medical center/teaching hospital, state of the art research facilities, classrooms, offices, sport and recreation facilities, dormitories, utility distribution systems, 8-miles of utility tunnels and two central utility plants. Other UW campuses and facilities comprise over 230 buildings and 4.5 million gross square feet including the University of Washington Tacoma and Bothell campuses, Pack Forest, Forks, Sand Point, Friday Harbor and the UW Tower complex.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Provide technical expertise and oversight during all phases of Capital Projects, including major capital and minor capital projects. Ensure projects comply with UW’s Facilities Design Guide (FDG), identify value-engineering ideas, actively observe construction and commissioning activities, visit construction sites and write observation reports, and confirm delivery of turnover-to-operation deliverables.
• Participate in building envelope commissioning process and act as UW Facilities representative on minor capital projects and review preliminary and final commissioning reports.
• Provide technical assistance, recommendations, and architectural solutions to campus planning, operation, maintenance, and alterations units. Troubleshoot and recommend solutions to resolve major operational and maintenance problems. Coordinate with shop personnel for building envelope renewal projects and assessments, corrective engineering, preventative and deferred maintenance.
• Champion environmental stewardship and sustainability. Be knowledgeable of green building best practices, application of new emerging technologies, and conservation strategies to reduce energy, water, and greenhouse gas emissions.
• Conduct architectural condition assessments and where necessary, perform limited field forensics to determine existing building envelope condition. Prepare analysis to identify deficiencies of building envelope needs. When additional forensics/ investigation is needed, prepare scope-of-work for consultant services and manage third party consultants and contractors. Develop proposed project scopes-of-work to renovate and upgrade building envelope systems for the Building and Utility Renewal Program. For small shop remediation projects, work with trades to design and oversee the work.
• Provide technical expertise to the ADA Accessibility Program to ensure the University is in ADA compliance with local, state, and federal regulations thru performing surveys and other methods. Participate with planners in mitigating deficiencies and execute projects to address them. Work with University ADA Coordinator in response to calls to remove architectural barriers to accessibility.
• Work with Facilities shops and EH&S in efforts to make the Campus a safe work environment.
• Participate in business continuity planning and emergency response efforts Engineering Services performs ATC-20 post-earthquake inspections that are essential for post-earthquake recovery and restoration of services. Engineering Services also provides support for utility outages, critical system failures and other emergency events.
• Contribute to the development and update of UW’s Facilities Design Guide. The FDG guides project teams to implement design consistency, maintainability, future flexibility and lowest life cycle costs of new building construction and renovations.

Requirements include:
• Bachelor's degree in Architecture.
• A minimum of 5 years of experience with an architecture license in the practice of architecture with emphasis on building enclosure, accessibility for the disabled, and safe access for workers.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• High degree of professionalism, integrity and ownership needed; must be customer-focused and results orientated, innovative, creative, highly motivated, team-orientates, and a self-starter.
• Able to establish and to maintain effective working relationships; e.g., clients, regulatory agencies, and personnel, health/safety professionals, consultants, management and peers to accomplish goals that are in the best interest of the University.
• Familiar with facilities and construction related computer software including Microsoft Office and Bluebeam.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Desired:
• Licensed Architect in the State of Washington
• Additional certifications in the field of energy conservation design, historic preservation, accessibility for the disabled and worker safety are encouraged. (i.e. LEED)
• Familiar with applicable building codes, and related testing procedures.
• Hands-on forensic investigation of building enclosure failure in pursuit of remediation.
• Experience with existing condition analysis for compliance with accessibility regulation.
• Working knowledge of Washington State regulations relative to worker safety in high places.
Conditions of Employment:
• Must be able to work in a variety of environments including outdoors, indoors, confined spaces, high spaces, on ladders.
• While usual hours fall within standard business hours, work may be required during hours beyond standard business hours including weekends. Position requires flexibility to deal with emergency situations, meetings, or other scheduled work that may fall outside normal work hours.
• Professional travel may be required.
• Must have a valid Washington Driver License.
• Must be able to work in non-smoking environment.
