Office of Research Information Services (ORIS), a division of the Office of Research, coordinates, develops, and supports electronic research administration for faculty and staff at the University of Washington. Goals include:
Improve service to Principal Investigators (PIs) and research and administrative staff, enhance their ability to obtain funding, reduce their workload, and streamline the processing of their proposals.

The University of Washington’s Office of Research Information Services has an outstanding opportunity for a full time Instructional Designer.
The Instructional Designer is responsible for overseeing and delivering the learning program for the Office of Research Information Services. The person in this role leads the design and development of online and instructor-led curricula for research administrators and researchers of the University of Washington. Working closely with ORIS’s Assistant Director for Customer Experience, this person has authority for the development and delivery of institutional-wide training program content.
At the direction of the Assistant Director for Customer Experience, the Instructional Designer develops and delivers online and instructor-led training on research-related software systems to audiences of researchers and research administrators. Scope of projects includes creating and updating course curricula and supporting materials for in-person classes; producing interactive training modules and software simulations; job aids and online tutorials; instructional and marketing videos; website copy; presentation materials; and technical documentation. The person in this position is expected to have excellent writing abilities, an eye for design and proven experience developing multimedia training and communications materials, as well as facility with presenting to groups. An understanding of adult learning principles and best practices for developing online learning will inform their work.
Working closely with the Assistant Director for Customer Experience, the Instructional Designer will develop and/or contribute to strategic direction and roadmaps for the training and outreach programs in ORIS with the goals of increasing product adoption and use, and improving the customer experience. The person in this position will independently develop training plans and project manage the development of complex training deliverables, such as elearning tutorials, ensuring deadlines are met and a high-quality end product is delivered to the learners.
This position is also responsible for administration of the learning management ecosystem, including a learning management system, learning record store and course registration tool. This person is expected to work with stakeholders to identify system requirements needed and perform analysis of available software products to determine best fit and inform learning ecosystem roadmap development.
This position requires learning and project management skills in order to determine the learning program requirements of a diverse community, design and develop curriculum, and deliver products while meeting deadlines. The person in this position must be proficient in gathering requirements and analyzing information from end users, as well as working with learning analytics to determine the effectiveness of the training and set future direction for training initiatives. The ability to negotiate and influence the project team and the communication team is critical to ensure requested features are included in the product, to determine the timing of communication, and the best means of marketing the product and the training available.
The Instructional Designer is responsible for the selection, development and administration of ORIS learning tools and learning goals which enhance the ability of UW researchers to secure grant awards from funding agencies. As one of the top research universities in the country, this role is pivotal in creating an environment that makes the process of preparing, submitting, and managing grants as efficient and successful as possible. With funding becoming more competitive, it is crucial that researchers and research administrators are equipped with the tools and the proficiency to use these tools to ensure that the UW maintains its top ranking and retains top scientists and faculty.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Management & Administration of Learning Program
Design, develop, and manage online and instructor-led course curricula that effectively and efficiently communicates to a diverse audience of research administrators, research scientists and faculty how the ORIS suite of research management tools function in order to ease the administration of grants.
Interface with leadership, product owners, partners and stakeholders to align learning campaigns and objectives with portfolio roadmaps, ORIS strategic objectives and feature release schedules.
Project manage specific learning and engagement campaigns while working collaboratively with other functional areas to contribute to overall product adoption strategic plans.
Collaborate with Training & Customer Support Analyst to manage course planning and logistics, including scheduling classes and rooms, updating the website with new class listings, tracking attendance, responding to participant inquiries, and ensuring classroom, training tools and materials are available and configured appropriately for all instructor-led training sessions.
Manage production and review processes for development of new course curricula and training materials.
Actively collaborate with the training work group CORE, which includes representatives of other Office of Research units and UW administration units, to create a cohesive training and outreach strategy.
Market training opportunities and create measurable engagement campaigns.
Influence ORIS product features to incorporate solutions to customer needs by creating a productive partnership with ORIS Business Analysts, UX, Communications and Quality Assurance. Alternatively, leverage these partnerships to inform curricula.
Advocate for the learning needs of the research community through business requirement gathering, audience feedback, surveys, and help desk requests.
Establish goals, create and analyze metrics to measure training program effectiveness and prepare executive reports for leadership.
Seek out and identify new instructional technologies to broaden the reach and accessibility of ORIS’s training offerings through requirements gathering, research, technical analysis and pilot testing.
Identify process improvement opportunities through business requirement gathering, audience feedback, surveys and customer support requests.
Represent ORIS in interdepartmental meetings and functions as they relate to system training as required.
Manage day-to-day activities of multiple assigned projects, communicate status updates to Assistant Director, and proactively identify changes in scope of work to ensure appropriate planning measures are taken to assess impacts of scope change.
Contribute to overall ORIS training, communications and customer experience strategy, using training needs assessment, evaluations and learning analytics to highlight training opportunities.
Collect and evaluate input from customers on potential system enhancements and new features gathered from feedback at trainings and surveys.
Provide customized training for onboarding internal ORIS staff, as needed.
Instructional Design & Training Delivery
Develop curricula and materials that efficiently and effectively meet the diverse needs of ORIS’s customers and respond to the changing needs of the business.
Initiate, plan and execute the development of new learning tools and revisions to existing tools from planning stages through design, delivery and evaluation. This responsibility includes independently producing professional and polished job aids, workbooks, presentations, video tutorials, elearning modules and other collateral.
Develop a comprehensive library of online training for ORIS end-users who require just-in-time learning.
Plan and facilitate workshops and lead instructor led-training sessions for members of the UW’s research community and internal staff on ORIS systems and services.
Coach other staff members and SMEs to deliver in-person training using a train-the-trainer approach.
Manage updates and revisions to existing training materials ensuring they are accurate and consistent with system functionality.
Work closely with the communications specialist and other members of the customer experience team to create a cohesive design vision and consistent style guide for learning and communications materials that adheres to the university’s brand guidelines.
Participate in collaborative editing processes and design reviews with the communications specialist to ensure a high-quality and consistent end product.
Learning Technology Infrastructure Management
Perform day-to-day administration of the learning management system, learning record store and course scheduling platform used for Office of Research training. This responsibility includes supporting up-time and SLA for these products, performing testing for software releases, and serving as Tier 2 support for requests from partner units. This responsibility also requires independently posting content, creating reports and maintaining quality and consistency.
Serve as technical liaison for Office of Research in the area of learning technologies with other campus departments and outside vendors.
Provide technical and analytics expertise in the area of learning technologies to Office of Research units, as well as ORIS product teams, to help advise on software and purchasing decisions, strategic directions for learning infrastructure and research-related learning program management.
Miscellaneous
Serve as back-up to customer support and communications specialist, as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
This position will primarily be expected to work standard working hours with some monitoring responsibilities outside of standard working hours.
REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s Degree in Education, English, Design, Technical Writing, Communications or a related field.
4-5 years of experience developing and leading instructor-led and/or online training.
Minimum of 2 years of experience with learning evaluation and assessment techniques.
Minimum 2 years of demonstrated experience designing and developing online and blended environment training using online learning tools such as Articulate Storyline, Camtasia and Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent tools.
Knowledge and practical experience delivering training using instructional design methodology and adult learning concepts, principles and practices.
Proven experience designing courses from the ground up using industry-standard processes.
Excellent interpersonal skills including verbal, written, presentation and facilitation skills with the ability to communicate effectively with all levels within the organization both technical and non-technical; ability to understand complex technical information and distill for lay audiences.
