Academic & Student Affairs (ASA) is a division of the Office of the Provost. Our mission is to enhance the student experience for all students—to, through, and beyond the university—inside and outside the classroom (in person and online).
We provide oversight, foster collaboration, pilot new ideas, and unify strategic efforts in and beyond ASA to ensure broad and universal alignment with UW values. We highlight and amplify strategic efforts within ASA and the broader ASA alliance (Graduate School, Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity, Student Life, Undergraduate Academic Affairs, and ASA Advancement) consistent with UW values to create a leading edge student experience. We support faculty in instruction and student access, learning and success. We pilot and launch new, strategic efforts and to support unit-led efforts.
Academic Technologies (AT) is a unit within ASA that supports teaching and learning technologies as well as formal and informal learning spaces with classroom design, integration, and maintenance service; and support for several UW event spaces.
We have an outstanding opportunity for an Instructional Technologist to provide support and training on the use of instructional technologies. The support and training functions focus on student and faculty use of UW Information Technology (UW-IT) provided tools, integration with cloud computing services, and other uses of educational technologies. The Technologist provides technical support for faculty who are integrating technology into their courses develops learning resources, advises on retooling of courses and course segments for traditional and electronic delivery; and consults with faculty and instructional staff on design, development, and evaluation of technology for instructional programs, materials, methods, and student support systems.
This Instructional Technologist works collaboratively with ASA, UW-IT, and UW Libraries' colleagues, vendors, and faculty in improving the student learning experience. She/he is able to work independently and as part of a team; to lead as well as follow; to maintain a supportive leadership style that inspires creativity, learning, and quality work while performing under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
Position Complexities:
This position requires a commitment to the support of student learning and faculty instruction, the ability to work collaboratively in a changing environment with operative deadlines, and the skill and patience to work with members of the University community (students, faculty, and staff) who have diverse technology backgrounds.
This person is expected to participate in national forums to present, discuss, and showcase our work.
Graduate and Undergraduate Student Schedules - Much of the work we do is accomplished through student support. As student schedules can be erratic and student priorities can fluctuate due to academic demands, it can be a challenge to coordinate support. A successful candidate will work to balance the needs and goals of LT with those of the students working to support those goals.
Technology - As technology is constantly changing, the Instructional Technologist must stay abreast of these changes in order to make appropriate recommendations, specifically in regards to software and hardware used in instructional support. A successful candidate will be able to identify and evaluate new technologies, and provide guidance to clients both internally and externally.
This position provides a critical role in the enhancement of learning and teaching. UW-IT provides a suite of resources to enhance teaching and learning, including an integrated learning management stack, lecture capture and multimedia tools, audience response systems, video conferencing, and cloud computing services.
As the premier provider and main support organization of general-access technologies in support of teaching and learning for the university, Learning Technologies serves more than 12,000 clients a day as their primary source of technical support for teaching and learning resources. It is critical the Instructional Technologist supports the technological needs of our clients by providing excellent consulting services and support that addresses those needs.
This position leads the support effort of the student experience for the use of learning technologies. The position leads special projects that include delegating work to peer professional staff.
Position Duties & Responsibilities
Instructional support (60%)
• Provide end-user support for UW’s centrally supported teaching and learning services including the Learning Management System, lecture capture, audience response tools, video conferencing software, and cloud computing offerings used in academic settings.
• Consult with faculty and instructional designers to analyze instructional goals, objectives and timelines to design, develop, and implement the above and other technologies in courses according to accepted instructional design principles, current research, and accessibility guidelines
• Work knowledgeably with faculty who are incorporating instructional technology (LMS tools, lecture capture, etc.) into courses that already utilize or are seeking to adopt a variety of pedagogical and instructional models.
• Author web content designed to help instructors integrate technology into their teaching. Web content currently includes text and image content using Plone DreamWeaver and basic HTML/CSS as well as videos using Panopto, among other tools
• Evaluate, document, and communicate with instructors on emerging teaching technologies and related tools, including blogs, wikis, Learning Management systems, social networks and platforms and multimedia delivery options and MOOCs.
Design, Assessment and Research (15%)
• Identify and plan appropriate instructional technology strategies and objectives based on analysis of tasks, learners, and subject matter
• Design evaluative strategies and instruments to measure effectiveness of training, materials and courses
• Coordinate, manage and track academic technology projects, develop and support educational technology initiatives
• Monitor current trends in educational technology practices and pedagogy, advocate for the acquisition and use of new technologies that support and connect faculty, IT staff and librarians with new ideas and approaches
Workshops, Outreach, Student supervision (20%)
• Develop, deliver and evaluate training for faculty development on the use of educational technologies
• In conjunction with other campus activities, organize symposiums and workshops
• Document frequently-asked questions from workshops and end-user support
• Promote the use of instructional technologies through printed publications, Web pages, and presentations
• Provide supervision for both undergraduate students
• Use a knowledge of effective pedagogy and communication and to help design workshops on the use of educational technology for instructors at the University of Washington
Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
Lead Responsibilities
This position leads the support effort of the student experience for the use of learning technologies. Position also assists with supervision of 20+ student employees in shared support spaces of LT.
Position leads special projects that include delegating work to peer professional staff.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position may directly supervise a team of hourly student employees.
Requirements include:
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer & Information Technology, Computer Science, Communications, or related degree.
Three years relevant and progressively responsible experience with incorporating technologies in classroom teaching to include:
• Experience working with university faculty on instructional technologies including course delivery tools
• Experience directly supporting students, including working directly with students and faculty in improving the student experience through the use of technology
• Ability to use and implement system operations and management skills to plan, implement, and oversee projects
• Experience managing student staff, including selecting, training and managing performance.
• Experience managing technology resources, including evaluating effectiveness, integrating with existing services and planning for future improvements.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, and organizational and customer service skills
• Demonstrated experience with executing technology or multimedia projects; web development and graphic design fluency; experience with visual design and layout as related to presentations and instructional delivery
Working knowledge of media delivery formats including streaming video, animations, and their integration into a course management system
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

• Demonstrated expertise in any of the following is desirable:
• Rapid training development and knowledge of Adult Learning Theories
• Learning Management Systems or Content Management Systems (LMS/CMS)
• Leading collaborative-creation of media-rich help documentation
• Presentation tools
• eLearning Authoring Tools, such as Adobe Captivate, Articulate, Lectora
• Multimedia tools
• Web development technologies (HTML, Flash, CSS, Java Script, Action Script, WordPress)
Conditions of Employment:
• Work in open office environment.
While the general working hours are within Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., this individual must be willing to adjust hours when necessary to accommodate the needs of his/her staff and colleagues. Events that will occur outside the normal work schedule include, but are not limited to; staff meetings, client consultations, and system modifications. Likewise, this position has regular stringent deadlines revolving around the academic calendar which may require extended work hours.
