The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine is the third largest clinical department within the School of Medicine with 285 full-time faculty members, 280 clinical faculty members, and over 200 staff. Department faculty provide clinical services in 5 hospitals, 14 primary care locations, and several outpatient sites in addition to telepsychiatry consultations to more than 150 clinics in Washington and beyond. As the only academic psychiatry department serving the five state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho), the Department’s highly competitive residency training program is largely responsible for developing the mental health workforce in the Pacific Northwest. The Department’s robust research portfolio totals $35 million in grants and contracts per year for projects ranging from clinical neurosciences to treatment development to health policy and population health. The Department is recognized as an international leader in developing, testing, and implementing Collaborative Care, an integrated care model increasingly seen as a solution for population-based mental health care. Other areas of excellence include Addictions, Autism, High Risk Youth, Neurosciences, and Trauma, and the Department is developing innovative new programs in Technology and Mental Health, Global Mental Health, Maternal and Child Mental Health, and Targeted Intervention Development.
The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Mental Health Practitioner Lead. This individual will provide mental health triage, crisis intervention and stabilization services to detained youth with developmental, neurological, psychiatric, emotional and behavioral disorders that impair a youth’s ability to function or cope, thereby placing the youth or others at risk while incarcerated. Additionally, this position leads and evaluates the work of two other mental health professionals and is responsible for representing the Division in collaborative activities with the County staff.
Responsibilities:
•Develop treatment plans in conjunction with the Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention’s staff.
•Evaluate youth who are at risk of self-harm.
•Act as liaison with community providers for detained youth.
•Perform related duties as required.
•Determine how youth are assigned to mental health staff.
•Review the assessments and treatment plans of mental health staff.
•Ensure that all policies and procedures are being followed by mental health staff.
•Conducts orientations for new staff.
•Participants in performance reviews for staff.
•Assist Clinical Director in coordinating student or post-doc activities.
•Consults with mental health staff on clinically emergent issues.
•Lead staff meetings in coordination with Clinical Director.
•Communicate with County staff about mental health staff activities and needs.
Minimum Requirements:
A Master's Degree in behavioral sciences such as psychology, psychiatric nursing, occupational therapy, vocational or educational counseling, or social work AND three years of experience as a Mental Health Practitioner or equivalent. Eligibility for recognition by the State of Washington as a clinical specialist, under the community mental health regulations, may be required. May be required to be eligible for a clinical faculty appointment.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Desired:
•Experience with multi-system involved children with severe behavioral problems and/or developmental disabilities
•Experience with King County PHP, Washington State Mental Health and Chemical Dependency WACS and JCAHO standards
Conditions of Employment:
Some on-call, evening and weekend work is required.
