Environmental or Mechanical Engineer
The Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center in Spokane is actively seeking a full-time Environmental or Mechanical Engineer to join our team. The employee serves as an Energy Manager advising and reviewing all projects in the region included in the parent medical facility's capital asset portfolio on best practices and compliance with Federal and VA standards. The salary range is $74,596 - $96,978. Benefited position - includes medical, dental, retirement, life insurance, generous paid annual and sick leave, and Thrift Savings Plan (similar to 401k).
Responsibilities
The Mechanical Engineer will be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) advising and reviewing all projects in the region included in the parent medical facility's capital asset portfolio on best practices and compliance with Federal and VA standards.
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Researches, develops appropriate unique applications, and implements Mechanical engineering and energy conservation initiatives.
- Manages and supports the Medical Center's Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC) and/or Utility Energy Service Contracting (UESC).
- Monitoring utility commodity and futures rates to determine if economically justifiable to enter into or change contracts for delivery of utilities such as natural gas, electricity, etc.
- Monitoring natural gas prices to determine when utilizing alternate fuel such as fuel oil in facility boilers is of economic benefit to the facility.
- Evaluates electricity provider rate structures and facility usage patterns to determine if or when load shedding is appropriate and develop strategies for electric load shedding and demand reduction.
- Review, monitor and update, building management system (BMS) control settings, alarms, sequence of operations, and recommend improvements to the system.
- Use the BMS to establish trends to trouble shoot Mechanical and HVAC systems and validate performance improvements.
- Work with energy plant personnel to monitor/improve efficiency of boiler and chiller operations.
- Determine local set back parameters for unoccupied spaces after hours.
- Evaluate existing energy savings systems, such as glycol loops, heat wheels and solar panels, and determine appropriate operational changes.
- Review and monitor contracts and contractor performance for water treatment such as softeners for boilers, legionella prevention, chillers and cleaning equipment for appropriateness and billing accuracy.
- Manage the building/energy management system(s) and utility metering initiatives (electrical, water, etc.) ensuring proper use, expansion and administration.
- Establish operating set points and monitor performance of Variable Frequency Speed Drives or similar devices.
- Inspect and monitor the steam condensate return piping system and appurtenances.
