Professor and Department Head
Job Description
The Department of Apparel, Housing, and Resource Management at Virginia Tech is accepting applications for the position of Professor and Department Head. The Department is in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences and offers a B.S. in Apparel, Housing, and Resource Management with majors in Consumer Studies, Family and Consumer Sciences, Fashion Merchandising and Design, Property Management, and Residential Environments and Design. With 18 faculty members across multiple ranks and 5 staff members, the Department currently serves 310 majors and 60 minors.
The start date for this twelve-month position is July 1, 2020. Review of applications will begin December 1, 2019 and will continue until a suitable candidate is appointed. The initial appointment as Department Head is for three years.
The principal/key responsibilities of the Department Head are: providing visionary leadership; advocating on behalf of all departmental programs; engaging strategic planning; overseeing university and foundation funding and expenditures; managing department budgets; supervising personnel; evaluating faculty and staff performance; writing departmental reports and governance documents; creating an environment supportive of diversity and inclusion; monitoring and supporting departmental communities; fostering alumni relations; building and maintaining industry and community partnerships; and traveling occasionally to participate in professional conferences and meetings.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in a discipline related to one of the subject areas covered by the Department of Apparel, Housing, and Resource Management
- A record of academic achievement meriting appointment at the rank of Professor at Virginia Tech
- Demonstrated leadership ability, interpersonal skills, and an ability to work collaboratively
- Demonstrated effectiveness in planning and administration
- A commitment to the human sciences and the threefold mission of teaching, research, and engagement
- A criminal conviction check is required for the successful candidate
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated effectiveness in working with diverse groups of students, faculty, staff, and other university constituents
- Experience managing budgets and directing/supervising personnel
- Experience in fundraising, external communications, and other advancement initiatives
Salary Information
Commensurate with experience.
